Bowes Railway

Bowes railway is the only standard-gauge rope hauled railway in the world which is in preservation. The extensive site has workshops, blacksmiths, steam and diesel locomotives and a huge collection of wagons and artefacts from the history of the Durham Coalfield.

Tanfield Railway

This lovingly preserved colliery railway’s original purpose was the movement of coal from the nearby collieries to ships waiting on the River Tyne. The surviving section of the original railway, the 1725 Sunniside to Causey section, is now the world’s oldest working railway.
